Pulitzer Prize for feature photography

Though usually upbeat, Saleh was sensitive about his appearance. One afternoon, when he saw other children staring at him, Saleh became angry and upset. Nurses sought to soothe him by taping a felt tip pen to this arm so he could draw pictures. Saleh drew an airplane dropping bombs.
This photo by Deanne Fitzmaurice of the San Francisco Cronicle is part of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner for feature photography. Deanne Fitzmaurice was awarded for her sensitive photo essay on an Oakland hospital’s effort to mend an Iraqi boy nearly killed by an explosion.

The Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography was awarded to the Associated Press Staff for its series of photographs of bloody yearlong combat inside Iraqi cities. Also nominated as finalists in this category were: Arko Datta of Reuters for his picture that captured a woman’s anguish in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami, and The Palm Beach Post Staff for its imaginative and panoramic coverage of hurricanes that struck Florida.
